What was George Washington's relationship like with his wife?

Martha Custis was a rich heiress who was a few months older than George Washington. She affected his political life by giving him resources and increased respectability. What she didn't give him, obviously, was children.

George and Martha Washington's relationship was a very loving and trusting one. Martha stood by George all through the war and presidency. They were married for over forty years and there is no evidence, whatsoever, that their marriage was unhappy.

The marriage was a close one. They endured much together: triumphs and losses. In surviving letters of the couple George calls Martha "my dearest", and she was known to have called him, "her love," and "old man."

In fact, when George died Martha moved out of their bedroom, never again to sleep in the bed she had shared with her husband for so many years. Furthermore, she burned all but two known letters of correspondence between the two, shortly after his death. Martha most likely did this to insure their privacy. When Washington died, she was a broken woman. She was deeply depressed and was said to have never been the same, again.
