On his way home from China after 17 years there 600 passengers and crew died on the trip back. Historians don't know the exact causes of the deaths. The trip took 2 years so there are any number of reasons. Within 3 years after getting home he commanded a galley in the war between Venice and Genoa. His ship was captured and he spent a year in prison .
