He did play a pivotal role with the defense of the French Directory against the Royalist Counter-Revolutionaries. In particular, he drove the Royal Navy out of the port of Toulon and defended the Directory with a Whiff of Grapeshot in Paris. That last little episode killed 1,400 protesters and cleared the Paris streets.
