Mary Anna Randolph Custis (1808-1873), the great granddaughter of Martha Washington Her father was George Washington Parke "Wash" Custis who lived with his grandparents at Mount Vernon following the death of his father John Parke Custis during the siege of Yorktown. Lee and his wife were married on June 30, 1831 in the family parlour at Arlington House. She had 7 children all of whom lived to adulthood, and six outlived her and Robert.

She had a decade struggle with degenerative rheumatoid arthritis and finally ended her life in a wheelchair.
