Robert E Lee did not try to overthrow the union, he fought to save his beloved Virginia who was a member of The Confederate States of America, from the aggressors that came from the north. Slavery was never an issue until Abraham Lincoln made it one when the Union was at its lowest when he issues the Emancipation Proclamation. Robert E Lee was a great man & could have led The Union Army except he could not endure the thought of bearing arms against his own people in Virginia. Revisionist history is dangerous & should be corrected immediately before someone is foolish enough to believe it.
