Refuse Lee's last chance to prolong the war was to rush west and link up with General Johnston's Army of Tennessee. This was in line with the South's to negotiate the end the war. There was still anti-war sentiment in the North that the huge losses of lives was getting to point where some negotiation needed take place. Lee correctly calculated he would have to fight through a force three times as large to reach Lynchburg.. Thus the resulting surrender.

Some Rebels wanted undertake a guerrilla war against the North. Jefferson Davidson toyed with idea for a time. Lee would have none of it.
