The Church was right along with the explorers. A monk or priest was usually on ship with the crew. The crews of Columbus's ships said 50 prayers a day. They kept time with a half-hour glass and every time they turned the glass they said a prayer. They also conducted a prayer service at sunrise and sunset. The Church also considered the native peoples as "heathen" since they weren't Christian or Catholic, so they were there to introduce the thoughts and religion to the natives they found. A native American came back with Columbus and it took the Vatican 6 months to decide he was human. The explorers were also to save souls in the New World.
