What was William the Conquerors cunning plan?

William was low on morale since some of his soldiers were leaving and there were rumors of William's death. He had to try a previous plan again. This was to run up Caldbec Hill and then start retreating to make Harold's soldiers give chase. They fell for the trick and were surrounded and killed.

Well, William told his army to charge up the hill and then retreat, which tempted the Saxons off the hill to chase the Normans. But then the Normans turned around and slaughtered the Saxons. This plan worked twice with equal success.

William ordered some of his soldiers to pretend to run away and some Fyrd followed them to finish them off but when they got to the bottom of the hill the Normans killed them. He kept doing that and the shield wall got weaker and weaker.
