A pillory was a mild form of punishment for trivial offences. It consisted of a stout upright post, around five feet tall, firmly planted in the ground. At the top was a horizontal plank with a second plank hinged above it, like a clapper-board. These had holes for neck and arms and the two planks could be locked together.

The person being "pilloried" was made to place their neck and arms through these holes and the planks were locked, fixing them in a half-standing, half-crouching posture. There they remained for the duration of their sentence, being pelted with eggs, rotten fruit and vegetables and any other unpleasant substance that happened to be available to the passers-by. Anyone punished in this way would likely remember the pain and shame of the experience for a very long time.

I have a map showing Canterbury High Street (Kent) in the year 1200, with a pillory located right in the middle of the street about halfway along its length.
