Aside from the obvious, meaning the end of slavery and the end of the Southern rebellion, two major developments became long term US problems. One was the fact that whites throughout the US, were shown to be anti-slavery citizens, ( Southern exceptions ) however, they were not for equal rights. This was a national problem. Secondly, the manner in which many Radicals handled the Reconstruction era, gave the Democratic Party a solid hold on Southern state politics for another 100 years.
