In 1513, Juan Ponce de León claimed Florida for Spain during his exploration of the region. He was seeking the legendary Fountain of Youth and believed that the land was rich in resources and potential for colonization. His expedition marked the first European contact with what is now the southeastern United States. De León's claim was significant as it laid the groundwork for subsequent Spanish exploration and colonization in North America.
