There was no "Q" Company in either army, nor of the Army of the United States today, simply because "Q" handwritten looks like "G," and can could lead to confusion in the fog and chaos of war. This is the same reason that "J" Company was omitted, in that lt looked like "I," and the letter J had only come into fairy recent usage by the time of the War for Independence. (1775-1782).

The legend of it being too "ladylike" is simply that, a legend.
