1st AnswerThis was a time of subsistence agriculture when families grew their own food, and no land meant no food. 2nd AnswerLand use was at the center of feudalism and the manorial system. Land was the only real source of income for the nobility, whose serfs payed the nobles rent in the form of a portion of the crop or the value of it. Land was granted by monarchs and higher lords to lesser lords, knights, and so on, in exchange for homage and oaths of support. The entire system revolved around the use of land in this way.
