There really was a lot of "poor" colonists. The lower class was the black slaves and the poor English colonists. Then, the middle class was merchants who created products to sell to those of the highest class. The highest class owned much land and many slaves, but they weren't used to working.

daily life was like umm... well you had to work if you wanted to eat said cptn. john smith and up to 3-4 people died every day from starvation, heat, disease, and hard labor.
