It was not easy. There were no electrical appliances, no movies or TV, no cars, no lights, no fans or air conditioners, people rode horses, walked, took boats or ships, and 95% farmed. They worked 6 days a week and went to church on Sunday. Children had chores to do to help the family, went to school, and as they got older they were expected to work more with the father or mother on the farm or in the house. To get most things people had to make what they wanted. Stores didn't have rack and racks of clothing, shoes were made by a cobbler, dresses by a dressmaker, they made their own butter, washed clothes by hand, and had to heat water to get hot water. Fireplaces were used for heating and cooking. 1777 was just as the war was starting so farms and towns were raided by the British. Men were off to war and their wives had to take care of the farm and children as well as worry about the future. John Adam's wife wrote him asking him what she should do if the British came to their farm. He wrote back telling her to take the 6 children and hide in the woods. Imagine, what she must have felt. Women all over the colonies had the same problem. There was also shortages of goods that people needed. Life was not easy.
