It was the time of the Great Depression!!!
The World War One (WWI) started in 1914 and ended in 1918. It caused a lot of pain and destruction. People were poor as they had maybe lost the breadwinners of their families (father - earns money!) to war; they were sad because they were bereaved a lot. So most people were depressed.

To find out more, read the book 'A Mother's Love' by Lyn Andrews. I've read it and I loved it, it had a sad ending but hey, life's not fair! Also, there was World War Two (WWII) after that (1939-1945).

Horrible

They were sentenced for death for doing nothing wrong, even young children were murdered. In concentration camps they did hard work for little food, they were lucky to get a bread crumb. They died of starvation and also when it was so cold they gathered up and would all die together of hypothermia.
