Afghanistan was one of the countries.
There is no leader, terror was used in the U.S. by pilgrims dressed as Indians and attacked british soldiers and goods.
That terrorists CANNOT be fought with conventional military personnel. They must be dealt with as the USN SEALS killed those three Somalian Hi-jackers earlier in 2009 while on the high seas. ONE SHOT; ONE KILL.
The impact is a negative image for the U. S. among most of the other civilized countries of the world for leading them into an untenable position. It also keeps the ignorant masses frightened and dependent upon the leaders who are pushing a "war on terror." The impact of sustaining a violent position towards terrorists only fuels them to reign more terror on the the major powers. A vicious cycle that self sustains.
The US has invaded several countries during the War on Terror in whole or in part, but the two most prominent such invasions were in AFGHANISTAN and IRAQ.

Yes and no. Many terrorists have been killed. The US capability to attack terrorists has been increased vastly. The US is less vulnerable to many different types of attacks. Terrorists have been forced to think of different tactics to attack. Different countries have been forced to stop supporting terrorists in their own national interest. Osama Bin Laden is dead. However, the war has created a new generation of people who hate America, and has vastly diminished US' diplomatic standing in the world. The ability of the US to gather ground information from friendly informants has been compromised. Many countries have been playing both sides, stating an intent to do harm to terrorists, but basically taking military and financial aid from the Western world with no real intent to fight terrorism.
Even the Russians are helping to fight the terrorists. They were victims from a strike too.
