On January 30, 1948 Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic, Nathuram Godse as he took his evening prayer on the grounds of the Birla Bhavan (Birla House) in New Delhi. He was 78 years old.

Godse, who shot Gandhi thrice with a Beretta semi-automatic pistol,

did not try to escape and later admitted to killing Gandhi. He and his co-conspirator, Narayan Apte, were later tried and convicted; they were executed on 15 November 1949.

Gandhi invited strong criticism from certain Hindus. Even while in West Bengal, he tried to influence the Government to pay heavy money to Pakistan which further aggravated the protests from Hindu fundamentalists. On January 30th 1948, Nathuram Godse reached Birla Bhawan shortly before 5.00pm. Ghandi was sitting in the warm sunshine preparing for his evening prayer meeting. He was as usual resting his head on the shoulders of two grand nieces. Nathuram who was wearing a khaki bush jacket and blue trousers climbed the steps and approached Gandhi. He greeted him with the traditional Indian salutation 'namasteh'. Gandhi smiled at him and greeted him with the same gesture, furthermore according to one version spoke to him. As quick as a wink, Nathuram whipped out a revolver and shot him 3 times in the chest. The bullets lodged into his chest, there was a weak feeble sound and Ghandi dropped down dead. He was carried into Birla House and died half an hour later, at about 5.40.

Nathuram fired a fourth shot, apparently in an attempt to kill himself but was stopped by a seargant standing alongside who yanked his arm and wrenched the revolver away. The enraged crowd, who had gathered to see their champion of independence die, fell upon Nathuram and beat him with sticks. However he was seized by the police and taken to the police station.

Gandhi's last words were, "He Ram" or "Oh God".

He was shot to death by a Hindu fanatic by name Nathuram Ghodse who was against his efforts to heal the hostilities between Hindus and Muslims. Gandhi was killed on Jan 30 in Delhi when he was attending a prayer meeting.
