The rich lived a life of luxury. The poor struggled to survive. They relied on a free grain dole dispensed by the state. They lived on the top floors of apartment blocks (insulae) in overcrowded rooms with no running water or cooking facilities. They went there just to sleep. They ate outdoors, went to outdoors public toilets and the the public baths. The millde class lived in apartments on the lower floor of the insulae which had running water. The rich lived in detached housed with an internal garden.
