British impressment of American sailors into their navy. Durint the Napoleonic wars, the Royal navy was desperate for men. British law gave the navy the authority to draft men into the navy by forcibly pressing a shilling coin into their hands. Press gangs would go out and literally kidnap men off of the streets to fill the navy's ships. Navy ships could also stop British merchant ships on the high seas and press men from their crews. Under the pressure of war the Royal nave began stopping American merchantmen, and even American men-of-war, and pressing their crews. Needless to say, this caused great resentment in the United States. It was one of the major causes of the war. A terrible irony of history is that the British government had withdrawn the orders authorising the navy to sieze American ships just before the congress declared war but the news did not reach America in time to make a difference.
The next significant war for America (following the War of 1812) was the war with Mexico. For Great Britain, the next war was the Crimean War.
