The main explanation for the origins of the American Civil War is slavery, especially Southern anger at the attempts by Northern antislavery political forces to block the expansion of slavery into the western territories. Actually, the major driving historical force was the progress of technology and economics, of which slavery was the most obvious symptom.

Starting around the 1820s, the Northern states moved from a small-farm and home-based industry economy towards a factory-based mass production economy. This led to increasing urbanization, higher population, and a social society based on wealth. A thriving merchant and middle class of skilled workers lead to reasonably diverse society, including one which had a relatively higher level of education than before.

The Southern states, however, retained their agrarian economy, built around larger-scale farming of primarily cash crops. This left a highly stratified society, with a few wealthy landowners, many poor farmers, and relatively few skilled workers. The form of farming depended entirely on slavery to produce its cashflow. Additionally, the social society retained its English aristocratic background, being heavily tradition and status conscious.

As slavery went from being a minor issue to a complete non-entity in the North, the abolitionist movement grew out of several influential religions. The South, already under increasing pressure as it lost political power to the increasing population and wealth of the North, saw abolitionism as an attack on its social foundation.

The root cause of the Civil War is progress - the North changed with the times, and the South refused to. Rather than adapt, the South chose to fight to retain its existing social order. Slavery was the foundation of this order.

Also, as a side note, the concept of "States' Rights" as a the major contention (and thus, the cause) of the Civil War is a fiction, created by the defeated southern society as a way to ignore their pre-War defense of slavery, which was now seen as a discredited and evil institution. No pre-War southern politician ever spoke about the issue of States' Rights other than in the context of the issue of slavery being the right of individual states to decide. That is, pre-War, "States' Rights" mean slavery. There was no discussion of what we now define as States' Rights - where the split of power between the federal government and states should reside.
Alot of people thought it was slavery. Believe it or not it that was a very small portion of the reason the war started. It was mainly because many states in the south decided to withdraw themselves and create the confederate states. They were all a different country technically because confederate means a loose union of independent states. The union wanted them back and thought to fight for them and they ended up bringing them back
