Anasazi Indians lived in the Great Basin Desert area, which is a cold winter desert (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_climate#Cold_desert_climates).

They were surrounded by steep canyon walls, where the only available shade could be found amidst the unforgiving heat of their mountainous desert home. Summer rains were unpredictable and often came in destructive thunderstorms. During winter, thick, heavy snow would cloak the ground in brilliant whiteness.

All considered, I would say that the Anasazi (and other Native Americans of the Great Basin) managed to thrive in one of the most brutal environments on earth, where few animals could even inhabit because of the regions extremes in heat and cold according to the time of the year.
