Australians were largely in favour of joining in the war, although the concept of a war itself would not have been welcomed. They were, however, keen to prove themselves as either representatives of a nation in its own right, or as allies and supporters of Britain. It never occurred to most Australians to not participate in a war fought on the opposite side of the world to us. It was a chance to show just what Australians were made of - and they certainly proved themselves with their unswerving loyalty and obedience to the strangest of commands at Gallipoli.
