Issued in April,1598, the Edict of Nantes put an end to religious wars that had damaged the unity of France during the second half of the 16th century. Henry IV of France, granted the Huguenots (Calvinist Protestants) rights in a nation that was predominantly Catholic. They were granted the restoration of their civil rights, the right to work in any career field including the State as well as the right to bring grievances before the court.
