What was the Hindenburg and what happened to it?

The Hindenburg was the name given to the largest airship, LZ129, operated by Germany for trans-Atlantic flights. It was over 800 feet long and contained enough room for passengers, cargo and crew. It completed over 30 trans-Atlantic passenger flights before crashing at Lakehurst, NJ in May, 1937. It used hydrogen for its lifting gas because the US refused to sell any helium to Nazi Germany.

The Hindenburg was the flagship dirigible of the Zeppelin company, it was a lighter than air balloon. However on May 6, 1937, it blew up. A combination of events led up to this, but essentially it flew through a lightning storm and blew up just before landing. Originally, people thought that the hydrogen gas used to keep it buoyant was the cause of its explosion, as hydrogen is very flammable when mixed with air, but more recent studies have shown that the paint, which is essentially thermite, was electrically charged and caught on fire, eventually blowing up the balloon.
