Militarily, the Japanese involvement in WWII amounted to around five million men in the army and a further 1.6 million serving in the navy at peak strength. Starting out with 17, the army eventually grew to field 140 divisions at peak strength, spread out all over the hemisphere concerned (around 25 - 35 of these were tied down in China and a further 10-13 in Manchuria/Manchuoko throughout the war). Japan also used very large numbers of smaller independent units. Her navy started the war (41 that is) with 10 battleships, 4 seaplane carriers, 37 cruisers, 86 destroyers and 63 submarines. As the war progressed, further capital ships were built. All of her forces were committed to the war effort, which ultimately had the purpouse of breaking her total economic dependence on raw materials supplied from areas dominated by western powers (and therefore dependence on the goodwill and tolerance of western governments). Japan lost around 1.7 million servicemen in the war. Did this answer the question? Sincerely Tommy

The Japanese supported the Allies in WW1. I think they felt hard done by for their support in the ensuing peace treaty & division of the spoils.....
Australia's involvement in Asia was to provide help to the Allies and also to a couple of Asian armies so they can stop the Japanese advance and push the Japanese back to their country to end the war on the side of Asia.
Increased involvement in the war
The Japanese lived a pretty harsh life during World War 2. Some were treated badly just because they were Japanese. Some even lost their jobs or got killed because they were not trusted. To learn more about the bombing in Pearl Harbor, read Under the Blood-Red Sun. Explains a lot about World War 2 and feelings of a Japanese-american boy.
