During World War II, the fighting style of the Soviet forces was initially unimaginative if also courageous: mass attacks and desperate defense, even when surrounded, were typical of units engaged with the German invaders. Later, and mostly as a result of having learned from the German "blitzkrieg" tactics, the Soviet fighting style evolved into a highly sophisticated (if also frontal-oriented) combined-arms approach, where air and armor and infantry and artillery units worked together to blast holes in the enemy line which could then be exploited by fast-moving formations designed for such a purpose.
