The Age of Reason was a period that came after the Purtians, seeing that in many respects, the Purtians were not 'reasonable' (Salem Witch Trials being a great example). The Great Awakening attempted to revive those strict and religious 'Puritan' sentiments. However, this kind of strict moral code could not last forever, and eventually softened. The Age of Reason marked the beginning of The Enlightenment, characterized by a rational approach to the world (think of all of the major scientific minds and philosophers in the late 18th century). Using logic, rather than ascribing everything to God's will as had been done during the time of the Puritans/The Great Awakening.
The main reason was so that they would have the freedom to practice religion as they saw it.
Puritans came to America simply to make the church of England more "pure", hence their name.
To get a colony started for the others.
The age of Enlightenment is another name for age of reason.
They wanted to live free from religious persecution. The king of England would not let the puritans worship their god. The Puritans came to the New World because they wanted to "purify" the Church of England.
Puritans based there entire life on God. They thought God had there life planned out for them from day 1. They believed that work, was extremely important in everyday life, and when they worked God saw and recognized that which helped them at heaven's gates. Opposed to the Age of Reason. They believed everything was brought up by the success of man. Man was the reason. When they got to the age of disbelief in religion and God, they went more towards Man. They too thought that working hard was important but not for the same reasons. They figured that working hard, shaped them into hard working men and woman... There you go.

One of the reason the Puritans went to North America was because they did not agree with the church of England and they were not allowed to practice their own religion.
