The variety of beetle that seems to have been used is the 'dung beetle'. At various times, in several societies, people have noticed flies emerging from dung.

In ancient Egypt, dung beetles were seen as sacred because of the way they rolled a ball of dung across the ground. This was seen to symbolize the sun rolling across the heavens each morning, and thus symbolized the rising of the sun, a new day, rebirth, and the circle of life.

They were also popular because scarab amulets were made as "letters", to announce marriages, engagements, etc.

People were also traditionally buried with a scarab amulet, and we call these amulets "heart amulets".
