You've got to remember, that for many countries was during Elizabethan and the Victorian periods. Morals were quite strict; it was not like today at all. There was much more 'propriety', and order and social expectation than today. Among those norms and traditions, clothing was also much more modest than is often the case today. Many today would see the old approach to dating as very 'stiff' - certain courtesies were observed, and the man almost always 'completely' looked after the woman, initiated the dates and paid for everything so associated. Society was, very much, male-directed.
