There were actually 3 gases used in World War I.

  • Mustard gas (named for its color and smell, also known as Yperite)
  • Chlorine gas
  • Phosgene gas (carbon dichloride oxide, an industrial reagent that was in weapon stockpiles for several decades afterward)

Tear gas was also used, which was not normally lethal.
