The February Revolution of 1917 was a pivotal event in Russia that led to the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II and the end of the Romanov dynasty. Triggered by widespread discontent over food shortages, military failures in World War I, and political repression, it resulted in the establishment of a provisional government. This revolution marked the beginning of significant political change in Russia, ultimately paving the way for the Bolshevik Revolution later that year, which would lead to a communist regime. It also highlighted the growing influence of the working class and the need for reforms in the Russian political system.

The February Revolution is referred to as the March Revolution in many contexts, particularly in Western historiography, because of the difference in calendar systems. Russia was still using the Julian calendar in 1917, which placed the February Revolution in February, while most of the world was using the Gregorian calendar, where the events occurred in early March. This discrepancy led to the alternative name, even though the revolution itself took place in February according to the Julian calendar.

The February Revolution occurred on February 22, 1917, according to the Julian calendar that Russia was using at the time. The Julian calendar was about 13 days behind the Gregorian Calendar which most of the rest of the world used. For the western world, the revolution occurred on March 8, 1817; however in Russia, it occurred on February 22, 1917, hence the name February Revolution. The following year, Russia changed over to the Gregorian calendar, but the February Revolution never lost that name even though the anniversary of the revolution was honored on March 8.
