James II was deposed by his own Parliament in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 - when the Westminster Government recognised the invading forces of William of Orange in preference to the legitimate king. The coup-d'état is sometimes called the Bloodless Revolution - but there was some fighting, albeit dilatory, and quite a few people were killed. Forces loyal to James were defeated in a handful of minor battles, and in the slightly larger battles at Boyne and Aughrim (1691). After Aughrim James was left with no credible army, and the Stuart monarchy was at an end.
The first major win was the Battle of Saratoga.
