During the period May 4-8, 1942 Japan used planes from two separate Fleet carriers (Shokaku and Zuikaku) and one light carrier (Shoho) to attack the USS Lexington and USS Yorktown. This battle was significant, since it was the first time in WW II that the US Fleet was able to hinder an advance by Japan in the Pacific.
