What was the impact of the Great Depression on the average American?

During the Great Depression, many people lost their jobs and and their homes. The economy was really bad. Population decreased because of decrease in money which resulted in a decrease of having kids because it was not affordable. Without money people were unable to maintain a certain lifestyle and therefore many people lost their homes.

Another way families were affected is that many teenagers were forced to become hobo's to make a living after their parent's lost their jobs. Hobo's would generally board freight trains for fast transportation at no cost to them. However, there are many people who have lost their lives while boarding freight trains, and it was illegal and still is considered illegal to do this. Other factors that contributed to their death's is that many teenagers had no idea of the dangers of freight trains.

The relationship between the national government and the people changed drastically. The government took on a greater role in the everyday social and economic lives of the people. The New Deal programs of FDR also created a liberal political alliance made up of labor unions, blacks and other ethnic and religious minorities, intellectuals, the poor, and some farmers. These groups became the backbone of the Democratic Party for decades following the Depression. As the federal government grew with new agencies and reform attempts, the cost of government increased. The growth of the government continued following the New Deal.
