Auschwitz-Birkenau (especially Auschwitz II) was the largest of the Nazi extermination camps. In 1989 Frantiszek Piper, the head of research at the Auschwitz Museum, calculated that at least 1.1 million victims, about 90% of them Jews, were killed in the Auschwitz complex of camps. Since then, nearly all serious scholarly discussion of the number of dead at the group has focused on the range 1.1-1.5 million. (These figures supersede earlier, higher figures issued by the Soviet authorities in the late 1940s).
