Alaska is America's "last wilderness," the last place in America with vast stretches of undeveloped, unpopulated land... It has grizzly bears and polar bears
One immediate result of the Homestead Act of 1862 was that it gave the slaves who were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation a place to go, a place where they would be welcome, not persecuted. It also created opportunities for landless US citizens and hundreds of thousands of European immigrants. The Homestead Act, officially opened on January 1, 1863, also created a method of westward expansion that would last for 123 years, until it was repealed in 1986.

The last claim under the Homestead Act was made by Ken Deardorff for 80 acres of land on the Stony River in southwestern Alaska. He fulfilled all requirements of the homestead act in 1979 but did not receive his deed until May 1988. He is the last person to receive title to land claimed under the Homestead Acts.
AnswerWell, it depends on what you mean by homestead law. There were laws from 1862 until 1935 that allowed people to "homestead" ... move on to a piece of public domain property, and if they remained for 5 years and improved the property, the land was theirs. Land in Alaska has been opened to homesteading more recently than that, and more may be, but homesteading is generally not legel anymore. Back then, those homesteads, which the people gained by living there for 5 years, was exempted from any debts that they had previously incurred... meaning, they couldn't live on the land for 5 years, and then someone just take it away again for some debt they had owed previously. These laws may have evolved into current homestead laws which usually protect someone's home from creditors... usually not incuding mortgage creditors however... see the below site for some details and an incomplete list of states. This last article is not currently updated, and there is contradictory information in it... if you think that the law might apply to you, the best thing to do is to ask a lawyer who specializes in this field.
No. You generally file in the state where you lived for most of the last 180 days. Exemptions are from that state unless you moved from another state within the last 2-1/2 years and bought land in your new state, in which case you may be limited to your old state's exemptions. (This is to catch people who move to states with unlimited homestead exemptions, such as Texas or Florida.)
The Homestead Act gave acres of western land to anyone who promised to work the land for five years. This encouraged many immigrants to come to the United States and help settle the West.
