The first world war caused a lot of social instability which led to the revolution.

There is no one main reason for the Russian Revolution.

It's a critical combination of several reasons which caused it:

- Fast growing rural population which didn't have enough agricultural land (most country's land was possessed by the government and nobility landlords)

- Poor conditions of the urban working class

- Oppression of the educated ethnic minorities (especially Jews and Poles which became able leaders of the Revolution)

- Obsolete, authoritarian and ineffective political system which had a very narrow social base (nobility and large business owners) and alienated small business owners and the middle class

- Decline of the faith and moral norms due to the corruption of the Russian Orthodox Church and restrictions of religious freedom for other confessions

- Hardships of the World War I

- Millions of weapons available in the hands of the oppressed peasants and workers due to their conscription to the army

- Negligence and poor judgment of the last Tsar Nicholas II

All those reasons combined caused the Russian Revolution of 1917

What were the causes of the Russian Civil War?

The main cause of the Russian Civil War was the previous Russian Revolution. The Russian Revolution was caused by poor treatment of the peasants and factory workers under the rule of Tsar Nicholas II. These poor conditions created two revolutions, one in February and one in October, named after their respective months. When the new government, called the Provisional government, threw out democratic rule and opted for a dictatorship of the proletariot, the Russian Civil War ensued.

What is the main cause for the Russian revolution?

The main cause of the Russian Revolution was widespread discontent with the autocratic rule of Tsar Nicholas II, exacerbated by social inequalities, economic hardship, and military failures, particularly during World War I. The hardships faced by the working class and peasantry, alongside the influence of revolutionary ideologies, fueled demands for political reform and social change. The combination of these factors led to mass protests and uprisings, ultimately resulting in the abdication of the Tsar and the rise of the Bolsheviks.
