On Day Two, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's Maine Regiment successfully defended Little Round Top against a vigorous assault by Alabama Militia. Simultaneously, General Custer's rash cavalry charges prevented Stuart's Confederate cavalry from outflanking the Federal forces and attacking it from the rear. The failure of Pickett's Charge convinced Lee to break off the battle, abandon his northern offensive, and retreat to Virginia to conduct a vigorous defense for the remainder of the war.
