the Barons gave land to the knights. and the knights gave land to serfs

If you mean before the reign of William of Normandy, England was ruled by Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Eastern England was most populated but the population was much smaller than it is today. Most people were peasants and only some where rich. Earls ruled the counties or states that England was divided into. :)
== == He made a book called the doomsday book, which showed him how rich or poor everyone was so he would know how much to tax everyone (rich people more, poor people less). He would then use the taxes to fight wars, build castles. When William took the crown, his first order of business was to break the power of the Anglo-Saxon earls who were the real powers in England, not the king. The feudal system was like a pyramid. At the top was the king. Under the king were the barons. The knights served the barons and the peasants served the knights. The king owned all the land. He gave some land to the barons. The barons had to obey the king and pay him taxes on the land. The baron had to take care of the fief or land. The baron divided up his land and gave it to the knights. They had to serve and protect the baron. The knights divided their land up and gave it to the peasants who had to pay taxes.
The KING gave grants land to the BARONS, BORONS gave grants land to the KNIGHT, KNIGHTS gave the grants land to the VILLENS, the VILLENS provide food and servide when demanded to the KNIGHTS, KNIGHTS proved protection and military service to the BARONS, BARONS provides money and knights to the KING.
They were like landlords (sort of). The peasants harvested food and cultivated the land, then they gave it to their lord (aka Barons) as tax. The Barons also provided protection against barbarian invasion with his knights. In the feudal pyramid, king and queen first, then barons along with the church, the knights then finally the peasants.
To show that he was at the top of the system and no one else was better then him.The system went abit like this: King William The barons Then the Knights Then the peasants

Yes, the Barons promised William loyalty and Knights, and the Knights promised loyalty to their Barons and 40 days a year of service in William's army.

Serfs. Being at the bottom of the social hierarchy meant that serfs did the bulk of the work and produced most of the goods, but the only benefit that they gained from the feudal system was the protection of their lords, which would oftentimes amount to no protection at all.
Knights typically provided military service and loyalty to barons in exchange for land or protection. In this feudal system, knights pledged their allegiance and were expected to fight for their barons during conflicts. In return, barons granted knights fiefs, which were parcels of land that could be cultivated or used to generate income. This relationship was foundational to the structure of medieval society, emphasizing mutual obligations and support.
Gentry refers to nobility. In England, the gentry refer to people with titles. These would be knights, dukes, earls, barons, viscounts, and the like.
