The Romans did not have a formal educational system. The sons of the very wealthy were taught at home by tutors. Pupils form affluent families attended classes which teachers provided for a fee. Three were three types pf teacher who corresponded to different levels of education. The literatus taught reading and writing, which was based mainly on the study of poetry. By the age of twelve they went to the classes of the Grammaticus, who taught expressive reading of poetry, poetic analysis. The classes were both in Latin and Greek. Pupils were expected to have at least some knowledge of Greek and to perfect their Greek in the classes. A small number of boys progressed to the classes of the rhetor, who taught rhetoric. This was an important subject for the wealthy elites as it was important for public careers. Rhetoric was divided into two branches: deliberative, which was useful for political and policy debates, and judicial oratory, which was important for a career as a lawyer. The pinnacle of education was a stay in Greece to study philosophy.
In Late antiquity, the Romans developed a system of teaching the seven liberal arts (based on thinking skills) divided into two stages: the trivium and the quadrivium. This method of teaching had been advocated by the Greek philosopher Plato. The first stage of education was the Trivium (tri + via; the place where three roads meet; the three ways) comprised grammar, logic, and rhetoric. This term came into use after the Romans, during the reign of Charlemagne. It provided the foundation for studying the term quadrivium (quadri+ via; the place where four roads meet; the four ways) which comprised arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy). The term was probably coined by the Roman philosopher Boethius (480-524 A.D.) in the early 6th century. The quadrivium was considered preparatory work for the serious study of philosophy and/or theology.

There are many differences. The main difference between Roman children and present day children is that they are from different cultures and societies. Roman children were taught respect for their elders and for the institutions of government. They were taught that civic matters should take precedent over personal goals. Today's children are educated in the opposite direction, with emphasis on self-esteem and personal achievements rather than working for the greater good. Roman children did not have the many health advantages that present day children enjoy. Many Roman children died before their tenth birthdays. And of course, the Roman children did not have the advantages afforded by today's instant communication methods such as phoning, texting, emailing, etc. There are many differences. The scholars who devoted themselves to the study of ancient Roman texts in Latin and ancient Greek texts were the humanists. The father of humanism was Petrarch who advocated the study of Latin literature and rhetoric. He lived in the 14th century, before the beginning of the Renaissance. Originally the humanists only studied Roman texts as no one could read Greek and knowledge of Greek works had been lost. The learning of ancient Greek and ancient Greek texts followed the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Many Greek scholars went to Italy, taught Greek and the study of Greek texts. The main effect of this was the revival of ancient Greek philosophy.
