Pioneers to a new land must build their lives from the ground up and that involves much dangerous, tedious and back breaking labor. The early colonists benefitted from having slaves to perform much of that work for no wages. An interesting aspect of life in colonial times was that slaves were a symbol of status for the early ministers. A well known and upper class minister might own two slaves. A woman to work in the house and a man to perform outside labor and also to rent out by the day as a source of income. Slaves were present in the earliest settlements in New England.
Many younger sons of English aristocrats emigrated to the New World to seek their fortunes since the eldest son inherited the estate under English law. They built the great Southern plantations with forced slave labor as the only way to preserve the affluent life style they were accustomed to on the English estates of their childhoods.
