In the Middle Ages, most books were produced by copyists who wrote them out by hand. Most of these people were monks, though a few were professional scribes for hire.

Books were authored by any literate person who wished to do so, however, and this included some people who were of very ordinary background. Margery Kempe was such a person, the wife of a struggling merchant and author of the oldest extant autobiography written in English. A lot of books were written by men and women at court, who had been educated, and this included plays and poems. Books on science and medicine were written by educated people, and it should be pointed out that some of the most important books on medicine were written by women.
