The NVA was an extremely aggressive army. They rolled into South Vietnam with conventional forces; tanks and infantry. No army on earth had been bombed the way the NVA had been bombed (relentlessly) by B-52 bombers. That toughed their cadre (because that's all they had left after such bombing). Any army that's tough enough to with-stand YEARS of B-52 bombing, would find it a "cake walk" (easy) when it came to invading South Vietnam (with no further B52 bombings). And they did...

I worked on the B52 in the seventies at Loring Air Force Base, and it was common to put 220 thousand pounds of fuel on a B52, which is about 36,000 gallons, along with a full load of bombs.
