The Union's first attempt to capture the Confederate capital of Richmond, was known as the first Battle of Bull Run or also referred to as the first Battle of Mananas.
The Union forces were led by General Irvin McDowell. The battle was in July of 1861. Confederate forces realized that McDowell could capture the important rail head at Mananas and so made their stand near a stream called Bull Run.
The ensuing battle was a disaster for the Union. They retreated in a panic.
Richmond, Virginia
The large numbers of Union troops landing on Virginia's eastern peninsula was not taken lightly. By April 14, 1862, the Confederates planned on reinforcing the Southern forces defending Richmond with troops called up from Georgia and South Carolina. It was hoped that this new army combined with Southern troops at Yorktown would slow down Union operations moving west towards Richmond.
In the First Battle of Bull Run approximately 28,000 Union troops faced approximately 33,000 Confederate troops. In US history, this was the largest ever US battle. Later on even larger armies would be engaged.
