AnswerThere were many aces during WW1 from ALL the countries that participated. An ace was generally defined as a fighter pilot who had shot down 6 or more enemy aircraft. The highest scoring ace from Germany shot down 80 a/c. The hightest from UK (a Canadian) shot down 73; France was 75; Americawas 26. There were also aces from Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Russia. It would be difficult to list all of them or even the top 10.Why? They were famous because of several reasons. These men were considered brave just to fly an airplane. The ones who could fly and survive a combat were considered as heroes. Also the countries sometimes used the exploits of these men to boost morale among the troops and also among the home front. Germany printed post cards with photos of their ace pilots.

The German fighter pilot of World War I who only had one arm was Manfred von Richthofen, famously known as the "Red Baron." However, it is important to note that he had both arms; the pilot you may be thinking of is Hans-Joachim Marseille or possibly another lesser-known figure, as one-armed pilots were rare. The Red Baron is celebrated for his aerial combat skills and is one of the most famous aces of the war.
If you mean during World War 2, the most famous fighter aircraft were the Spitfire and Hurricane and the most famous bombers were the Lancaster and Wellington.

Aces of World War II lists over 1,270 American Aces...This is the most complete list I have seen...By contrast, there are over 5,000 documented German Aces from WWII, and German pilots had no shared victories, only one pilot could claim a independently witness and verified "kill"...If the pilots couldn't agree who got the kill, neither one was credited, it went to the staffel...Tjm
