Lindbergh flew a specially built Ryan NYP. Lindbergh liked the Ryan M2, a popular mail plane, ( Lindbergh had been a US Airmail pilot ) but needed too many special differences for his Atlantic flight. Ryan Aircraft in San Diego built him the NYP for $10,800. This had a new Wright Whirlwind J-5C 223-hp radial engine. Lindbergh had liked the idea of 2 engines for reliability but a single engine offered less weight and more range. His NYP was designed to carry 450 gallons of aviation gas. This would give him over 4,000 miles range. Lindbergh named his aircraft "Spirit of St. Louis" for his main financial supporters.
