Some Egyptians were sold into slavery because of debts or sold themselves to escape poverty. As indentured slaves they did not lose all their civil rights; and sometimes the economic security they gained through their new status might seem to be worth giving up some freedoms for.

While there had been slaves in Egypt since the beginning of its history, their numbers greatly increased during the New Kingdom, when the pharaohs were committed to a policy of foreign involvement and conquest. Thousands of these slaves were set to work on building temples, monuments, quarrying and working in the mines. They were at the mercy of tough overseers. They were usually naked and punished if they didn't work hard enough.
