The purpose of the Yellow Star was to make Jews instantly recognizable. The use of a badge was not instantaneous throughout Nazi-occupied Europe. The Yellow Star, inscribed with the word "Jude," has become a symbol of Nazi persecution.
Persecution of the Jews had happened before - though without the Nazis' ideoloical baggage, but genocide of the Jews was new. The thoroughness and fanaticism of it were also new.
