The rule of the British East India Company effectively ended after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which was a widespread but ultimately unsuccessful uprising against Company rule. In response to the rebellion, the British government dissolved the Company in 1874 and transferred its powers to the Crown, leading to the establishment of direct British rule in India, known as the British Raj. This shift marked the beginning of a new era in India, characterized by direct governance by the British monarchy and Parliament.
